Is Siberia a country? Was it ever a country? Is it really that cold? Is there a Siberian language? Why is Russia so big? No, no, kind of, no, and because nobody else wanted all this Taiga with its stupid oil, gas, diamonds, snow, tigers, and permafrost. Ok, that’s not true either. Siberia had an indigenous population before Russian exploration and conquest, and the story of native Siberians is remarkably similar to that of the native Americans. Many of those indigenous peoples remain today as an ethnic minority within Russia. In this first part of the episode on the history of Siberian exploration and conquest, I’ll dive into my own experiences growing up in Siberia in the city of Irkutsk on the lake Baikal. I’ll talk about some of the many similarities between European-American and Russian-Siberian expansion and fate of the people it affected, some myths and misconceptions about Siberia and life there, and try to explain what it is like to be born and raised there.
