#BD_ENDOSCOPY A "coin foreign body" refers to a swallowed coin that becomes lodged in the esophagus, or food pipe, and requires medical attention. Coins are the most common foreign objects ingested by children, and while many will pass through the digestive system harmlessly, esophageal impaction can be dangerous. A doctor will likely perform an X-ray to find the coin's location and, if it's in the esophagus and not removed quickly, it will need endoscopic removal to prevent severe injury or complications. Why it's a concern Location Matters: Coins that pass into the stomach and small intestine usually pass out without issue. However, coins lodged in the esophagus can get stuck and cause serious problems. Potential Complications: A coin stuck in the esophagus needs removal within 24 hours to avoid complications like damage to the tissue or surrounding structures. What to do 1. Seek immediate medical care if symptoms arise: If you suspect a child has swallowed a coin and shows symptoms like difficulty swallowing saliva or breathing, go to the emergency department or call an ambulance immediately. 2. Go to a hospital for evaluation: A healthcare professional will likely perform an X-ray to confirm the presence, size, and location of the coin. 3. Do NOT try to induce vomiting: This can be dangerous, especially with other foreign objects like batteries. Treatment Endoscopic Removal: If the coin is in the esophagus, a doctor will likely use endoscopy to remove it. Foley Catheter Technique: For certain simple cases, a Foley catheter can be used to remove a coin from the esophagus, but this is usually done by experienced operators.
