VENICE, CA — Friday, February 6, 2026 — A coordinated multi-agency cleanup operation was conducted Friday morning in Venice as the City of Los Angeles continued sanitation and public-safety efforts in areas impacted by homeless encampments. During the operation, Environmental Compliance Inspectors identified what appeared to be an abandoned encampment in a Fourth Street alley. The site included accumulated personal belongings and two dogs that were found leashed at the location. City workers and officers proceeded cautiously due to the presence of the animals, temporarily pausing cleanup activity while the situation was assessed. It was initially unclear whether the encampment was located on public or private property. After further review, officials determined the area was private property. Los Angeles Police Department officers attempted to contact the property owner to obtain permission to proceed with removal of the encampment but were unable to reach the owner at that time. Later, a man arrived on scene and told officers he was familiar with the dogs and the belongings at the site. After speaking with police, he left briefly and returned a short time later, at which point he took custody of the dogs and removed them from the area. City personnel indicated they will continue efforts to locate the property owner and plan to return at a later date to address the encampment once access authorization is resolved. Following the interaction, crews cleared the scene and moved on to additional cleanup locations nearby. The operation was led by the Department of Public Works, with assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department, Environmental Compliance Inspectors, Clean Harbors Environmental Services, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, and a homeless coordinator from the office of Traci Park. The joint response brought together enforcement personnel, sanitation crews, hazardous-materials specialists, and outreach workers. Representatives from Councilwoman Park’s office assisted with inter-agency coordination on site, while LAHSA outreach staff were present to offer services and resources related to homelessness.
