This song came to me as somewhat of a worshipful meditation. It sprang from reading Pilate’s words (in John 19:5) as he presented Jesus to the mob clamoring for his death....“Behold the man!” He had no idea that one day “through this man” would be “preached unto you the forgiveness of sins”(Acts 13:38) or that one day that same man would “judge the world in righteousness.”(Acts 17:31) Today we look back in wonder at the coming into this world of the Son of God. We are in wonder at his substitutionary sacrifice of his life to provide the gift of Eternal Life for us. But today and throughout our eternity with him, we will be reminded that he always carries the marks of Calvary. We will surely never forget how it came to be that we are there. Behold the Man! Behold The Man! He now bears all the marks of an old rugged cross, Cruel wounds that weren’t His before; He to Calvary’s tree went most willingly, That for you and me He’d open the door. CHORUS Oh, behold the Man called Jesus! Lamb of God, He God well pleases; Wounds and piercings tell the story How He left his home in Glory, Took our place, and bears those marks For you and me. Because He has done this thing we are sons of God; Soon we’ll be in the likeness of Him; In perfectness we will gaze on the One we adore, Who bears the marks of what was ours because of sin. This newly-slain Lamb we’ll see throughout all eternity, The only one who in heaven will be marred; Love will only fill our hearts as we look into His face, Knowing that to make us thus, His form was scarred.
