Jaisalmer Fort, also known as Sonar Quila or the Golden Fort, is a magnificent living fort located on Trikuta Hill in Rajasthan. Built in 1156 AD by Rawal Jaisal, this architectural marvel made of yellow sandstone radiates a golden glow, especially in sunlight and at sunset. The fort spans about 1500 feet in length and 750 feet in width, with towering 30-feet-high walls and 99 bastions providing solid defense over centuries.Inside, the fort is like a small town, bustling with residents, shops, hotels, havelis (ornate traditional mansions), temples, and narrow stone-paved lanes. The fort's layout features four massive gateways—Ganesh Pol, Akshya Pol, Suraj Pol, and Hawa Pol—leading to the core citadel area and royal courtyard. Historically, it was both a military stronghold and a royal residence with palaces like Raj Mahal adorned with intricate carvings, mirror work, and beautiful artwork.Notable structures inside include several finely carved Jain temples, vibrant havelis built by wealthy merchants showcasing detailed facades and balconies, and public wells that still supply water. The fort’s unique triple-ring defense system, basions, and architectural blend of Rajput and Mughal influences make it a timeless symbol of Rajasthan’s rich heritage and living history. This magnificent fort is not only a prized cultural monument but also a living community where life continues much as it has for centuries. Visitors get to experience a blend of history, culture, and local life inside one of India’s most iconic forts #rajasthan #jaisalmer #Fort #tamil #travel #viral
