In her inaugural lecture, Professor Lesley Batty reflects on a career shaped by curiosity, commitment and time spent in the field. As Professor in Ecological Education in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham, Lesley explores how fieldwork can transform learning — building confidence, practical skills and a deeper understanding of the environments around us. From industrial and post-mining landscapes to inclusive teaching practice, her work bridges ecology, education and employability. In this lecture, she shares insights from years of research into industrial pollution and ecological restoration, alongside her passion for creating inclusive learning environments and skills-led education. She also reflects on the value of field experiences in preparing students for meaningful careers beyond the classroom.
