Santa Cruz Island, whose cantonal capital is Puerto Ayora, is the second largest island of the Galapagos Islands (after Isabela Island), and the most inhabited and economically active of the archipelago. It is located in the center of the group of islands, with an area of 986 km² and a maximum altitude of 864 m a.s.l.1It is a dormant volcano whose last eruption is estimated to have occurred a million and a half years ago. As a testimony to its volcanic past, there are two enormous cavities called "Los Gemelos" that were formed from a magma chamber. The island is characterized by its geological landscape and the variety of its vegetation, distinguishing 7 areas. The island is full of natural charms, beautiful beaches, unique animal species, lush vegetation, craters and lava tunnels. Currently the population is approximately 15,701 inhabitants.2 Named after the Cross of Christ, its name is due to the English ship HMS Indefatigable.1 History The formation of Santa Cruz Island occurred approximately 1.5 million years ago. To testify to this, we can find in the upper part of the island two large collapses formed by a lava chamber called Los Gemelos.3 The archipelago was discovered by Fray Tomás de Berlanga in 1535, and in the following centuries pirates, buccaneers and whalers used the islands for provisioning and repairing their boats. Since 1832 it has been part of Ecuador. Santa Cruz was colonized at the end of 1920 by a group of Norwegians, their dream of canning fish was not consummated and some of them settled in the upper part and changed their fishing activity for agriculture to live. It was considered a national park in 1959, being one of the first protected areas in Ecuador. Prehistory Archaeological remains have been found that show that the first visitors from the coast of Ecuador arrived in "rafts or in floating artifacts with sail technique created by themselves and that allowed them to travel very far into the sea. No traces of permanent settlement have apparently been found on the island. After a long time in 1535, Fray Tomás de Berlanga, the bishop of Panama, discovered the Galapagos Islands and along with them Santa Cruz Island because on the trip they were making from Panama to Peru they got lost and found five islands, including Isabela Island. They called the islands "Galapagos" because the shell of the turtle that lived there looked very much like a Spanish saddle that It was called "turtle". The scarcity of water and the abundance of rocks made a bad first impression. Geography and climate Galapagos otarios on a pontoon on Santa Cruz Island. Geography The Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean 1000 km from the Ecuadorian coast. It has an area of 8000 square kilometers where 97% is declared as a protected area by the Galapagos National Park. It consists of 13 large islands.4 Climate The climatic variation that occurs in the Galapagos Islands is strongly influenced by marine currents such as the Humboldt Current and the trade winds that blow relatively constantly in summer. The cooling effect of the Humboldt Current means that the climate of the archipelago is generally temperate and dry. The approximate temperatures that can occur on Santa Cruz Island are from 20 °C to 31 °C and there are two seasons.5 One of the seasons, the coolest and driest, with overcast skies most of the day and winds blowing from the south and temperatures ranging between 18 and 20 °C. It occurs from June to December. The opposite season is hot and rainy, when the wind blows from the north, with very sunny, short and heavy rainfall days and temperatures between 24 and 31 °C. It occurs between the months of January and May. The average annual rainfall on the coast is between 0 and 300 mm per year, while in the upper part it is between 300 and 1700 mm. The period from January to March is considered the hot and humid season, with March being the hottest month of the year; During this season, plants are abundant, and the water temperature is ideal for diving.6 My name is Eric Clark and I am a world traveler.
