160,000 Apply for Texas School Voucher Program

Applications are pouring in for Texas’ new school voucher program. More than 160,000 students have already applied for the state’s Education Freedom Accounts, which allow families to use public money to help pay for private school tuition. Data from the Texas Comptroller’s Office shows about one in four applicants currently attend public school, while another quarter are students too young to attend school this year. Roughly half of applicants were already enrolled in private school or homeschooled. Supporters say the program expands education choices, while critics continue to call for greater transparency and accountability in how the taxpayer-funded program is used.
