Tour of the Brand New eBART Trains!

Read this description if you wish to learn more about eBART and these new train cars: Here it is... the first tour of BART's brand-new eBART train cars on YouTube! BART invited the public to take a tour all around the new eBART trains on September 21, and we captured nearly every inch of it to show every BART fan what these trains have to offer. These Stadler GTW trains were manufactured in Switzerland. You can also find these trains in Austin, Dallas and New Jersey. Rather than being fully electric, like the rest of the BART system, the eBART trains are DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit), with two engines located in the center of each car. These trains are manually operated, unlike the rest of the BART system, which has automatic train operation (ATO). When the driver exceeds the track speed limit, a red light turns on, notifying him/her to show down. If the driver fails to slow the train, an emergency brake is automatically applied, shutting the whole train down. The trains feature fully automatic announcements and feature destination displays that flash the next stop on the line. The seats, as we discovered very quickly, are quite comfortable, with a matted material. Since passengers will not be on eBART for more than several minutes, the trains have been designed to accommodate much more seating than regular BART trains. There are two spaces for wheelchairs on each set of cars, which can be used to park bikes if there are no wheelchairs present. Luggage racks are available above all seats in every car. The train doors are opened by the passengers themselves - you push a button, and the doors open for you. After several seconds, they will close automatically. If someone happens to step through the doorway while the doors are closing, the infrared sensors will push the doors open again, preventing the doors from closing on anyone walking through. During off-peak hours, there will be two one-car trains running at the same time. During rush hours, an additional car will be added to each train. Although BART has not told us yet, we suspect just one train will be in operation on weekends. The eBART system consists of about 10 miles of track and two stations: Pittsburg/Railroad Ave, close to Downtown Pittsburg, and Antioch/Hillcrest Ave, the eastern terminus. eBART connects with BART at Pittsburg/Bay Point, where passengers can transfer between both trains on the newly built Platform 3, just east of the current Platforms 1 and 2. Transferring takes about two minutes. And finally, when eBART is projected to open: Original schedules had revenue service starting around May of 2018, but the most recent projections have stated eBART will open around December 2017, five to six months ahead of schedule. Of course, this is BART we're talking about, so don't ever assume a projection of an opening is correct, but we're hoping to be able to officially ride eBART in 14 months.
