(27 May 1978) Spain's Jose Higueras stormed off the court in disgust over crowd behaviour, during his match with Italy's Adriano Panatta. Each time Higueras addressed the ball, the crowd hooted and whistled, putting the Spaniard off his game and giving Panatta the advantage. Objects were thrown onto the court and twice Higueras stopped playing. He was jeered even louder when he resumed. Finally under pressure the Spaniard made an obscene gesture to the crowd. They reacted in pandemonium and then veteran umpire Berty Bowron became involved when he was overruled on a close line call. The umpire quit in disgust, saying later: "I've never seen anything like it. Some thing has to be done to control this kind of crowd behaviour." After Higueras again came out to resume play he was met by still more hooting and whistling.
