Dr. Rahul Ramachandran (May 31, 2017) Data has been the foundation of science and the basis of our understanding of the Earth. With rapid innovations in technology enabling us to collect, record, and generate data, the challenges of managing and deriving knowledge from these data have now taken center stage. In order to address these challenges, NASA MSFC’s Data Science and Informatics Group (DSIG) was formulated. DSIG’s research focuses on informatics and data science components in both the foundational data lifecycle and the knowledge generation lifecycle. The data lifecycle supports the knowledge generation lifecycle, which represents the set of processes involved in knowledge generation and provides a roadmap to identify where data and information can be enhanced or even lost. The goal of DSIG is to make the knowledge generation process frictionless for researchers, address existing gaps and hurdles, integrate new evolving technology seamlessly, and enable new research capabilities. This presentation will provide an overview of DSIG’s operational and research portfolio. The overview will cover the Global Hydrology and Resource Center (GHRC), which is one of NASA’s twelve Distributed Active Archive Centers, as well as recent and ongoing R&D projects on data curation, knowledge graph development, and deep learning activities.
