Luhartz: Musical Group from Durango, Spain Plays in Bakersfield

The popular Basque music band Luhartz has made repeated visits to the U.S. to play at Basque festivals in Bakersfield, Calif., Boise, Idaho and Reno, Nev.. The five-member group, which includes accordionist Rafa Iriondo and singer Aintzane Uria, hails from the Durango area in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country. They specialize in Basque dance music. They are committed to preserving the Basque language, singing only in Basque. In an interview, Rafa Iriondo explains that they take popular songs in other languages and write their own lyrics in Basque, to promote the language. He says the group appreciates that Basque clubs in the U.S. have maintained the culture of their homeland.
