Hello Fellow Folks! I hope you are having a fun day today! Robert Louis Stevenson. Writer of adventure works like Treasure Island, and horror works such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He is incredibly well known. So let’s look at his short story, The Bottle Imp, set on Hawaii and written near the end of his career. By now, Stevenson has mastered his craft, and he is also living in the Pacific Ocean in places like Samoa. This shows his love of the area and experiences in the culture thereof. The Bottle Imp is an incredibly clever story, as the poor main character encounters a bottle with an imp that will grant your wishes, but with a curse to them. You can only get rid of the bottle and the curse by selling it to someone for less money than you bought it for, and you have to give the person the full story. Our point of view character purchases the bottle, confirms the story, gets riches but in a dark way, and sells it. But after marriage to the woman that he loves, he develops leprosy and is likely to die and has been cast out, so now he searches for the bottle that will cure him. It’s a clever plot idea, and once that resonates. Like Jekyll and Hyde taps into a deep well of Freudian archetypes right at the beginning of psychology as a study, this taps into a vein of Faustian identity as well. It’s also well paced, and well described, and Stevenson is at the top of his narrative game. It’s long since passed into public domain, and you can find in in a number of collections. Here’s a pdf if you want to download it and read it for free - https://www.math.tamu.edu/~boas/cours... Have you read The Bottle Imp? What did you think of it? Did you agree with my video?
