The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) has always stood at the forefront of protecting workers, communities, and our oceans. On World Maritime Day 2025, we honour not only the seafarers and wharfies who keep our ports alive, but also the extraordinary legacy of Australia’s merchant navy. #seafarersandseamen For more than a century, Australia’s merchant navy has been the lifeline of our island nation. From carrying essential supplies across treacherous seas, to serving with courage during times of conflict, merchant seafarers have shaped our history and safeguarded our sovereignty. During World War II, merchant ships carried troops, food, and ammunition under fire, with thousands of merchant seafarers making the ultimate sacrifice. Their bravery remains one of the great unsung stories of Australia’s past. #OurOceanOurObligationOurOpportunity Today, the merchant fleet continues to power our economy, transporting goods, fuel, and resources that sustain every Australian household. At the same time, the MUA campaigns for strong, safe, and sustainable maritime industries—fighting against unsafe deregulation, supporting seafarer welfare, and ensuring that our oceans are protected for future generations. #IMO This video shines a light on the voices of those who keep the nation moving: the Dockers, tug crews, and seafarers who work tirelessly to make sure 98% of Australia’s trade by volume arrives by sea. It is also a call to recognise the merchant navy as a vital part of our national identity and to secure a strong, Australian-crewed fleet for the future. #Seafarers Join us as we celebrate the resilience, sacrifice, and enduring contribution of Australia’s maritime workers. #maritimeunionau
