Hurricane Irene: A South Florida Blizzard

Hurricane Irene nicked South Florida on August 25, 2011, but what a nick it was. Big waves, powerful gusts and broken surfboards said it all in Delray Beach. Before the strongest squall blew through (action video starts at 1:50), the winds weren't all that severe and the waves were just right for surfing and sightseeing. When the squall hit, it was fast and furious. I decided to try to ride it out on the beach -- a stupid move I'll never make again. Blowing rain and sand stung like a hundred bees. The sand got into everything, including my non-weather proofed camera. When it was over, I looked like a cinnamon donut. It took hours to work the sand out of my camera and bring it back to life. Considering this was just a glancing blow, I feel lucky. This experience serves as a powerful reminder why we have to prepare when a real hurricane's headed our way.
