Yuichi - Ura Echoes from the Other Side For Ensemble and Electronics About this piece This work reexamines the very act of listening through the interaction between acoustic instruments and live electronics. The instrumentation includes flute, B♭ clarinet, horn, percussion, piano, violin, cello, double bass, and real-time sound processing using MAX/MSP. The title Ura derives from the Japanese word meaning “reverse side” or “hidden side.” The piece attempts to render audible the space and perceptual instability that lie behind sound. Sound is treated not merely as a physical phenomenon, but as an entity that continuously generates, transforms, and disappears. The boundary between acoustic and electronic sound is intentionally blurred. The work is structured in four sections, each inspired by the horror stories of Junji Ito. The electronics function neither as accompaniment nor decoration. They act as another performer, transforming the origin and direction of sound. The question of where sound comes from and where it disappears persists throughout the entire piece. This composition is an exploration of the “other side” of sound and a first step toward a reinterpretation of auditory perception. The sensation that emerges between reality and unreality—“strange but real”—is not simply fear, but the subtle moment when the contours of existence quietly shift.
