Dr. Jean-Batiste Marion talking to nurse 13. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Jean-Baptiste Marion, emergency coordinator of MSF (Doctors without Borders) at Dr. Wizard hospital: "We started responding to cholera when the first cases were identified in Port-au-Prince. We quickly started to open one treatment center and then more. We have no idea how much we can expand our capacity but what we've seen is that the number of patients keep coming (increasing) and we have a very high number of admissions daily in all of our centers. In this structure (hospital), we receive approximately 50 patients every day, but all together, in Port-au-Prince people are seeking treatment for cholera. The actual number of patients is hard to estimate, there are probably people who cannot access health care and are staying in their neighborhood and not coming to the health center to be treated for cholera." 14. Various of hospital infirmary STORYLINE: Cholera cases are overwhelming Haiti as experts warn the situation could worsen now that the country is returning to its usual frenzied pace following a fuel blockade that lasted two months. Dr. Jeanty Fils, a spokesman for Haiti's Ministry of Health, told The Associated Press that the government does not have sufficient IV supplies and is still discussing whether to request cholera vaccines. "We need more resources," he said. "Cholera cases continue to climb in Haiti." At least 156 people have died and more than 6,900 are hospitalized, although officials believe the numbers are much higher because of under-reporting. Fils noted that cholera cases were likely contained during the fuel blockade since gas stations were closed and most of the country remained at home but fears that now, with the lifting of the fuel blockage, people will move around the disease will spread more. The number of patients seeking help at Doctors Without Borders hospitals in the capital of Port-au-Prince have increased in recent weeks, with more than 6,500 admitted so far. People can survive cholera if they are treated on time, but the recent lack of fuel and ongoing violence between gangs that has worsened since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse has prevented Haitians from reaching hospitals and medical clinics. Her other child, a 7-month-old daughter, is still hospitalized. But it wasn't clear if and when that might happen.
