Do you have a hard time talking to people? According to the National Institute of Health, 7.1% of U.S. adults experience social anxiety disorder each year with more experiencing anxiety, but not enough to be diagnosed. That’s roughly 15 million Americans who have a hard time just talking to other people. So if you’re an introvert or struggle to hold conversations with other people, you’re not alone. Maybe you’re one of the millions of people who prefer to communicate through writing. Hey, I’m Cameron. I’m a professional writer and author and I use this YouTube channel to help writers, like you, finish your projects. Many famous writers throughout history have suffered from social anxiety. One that immediately comes to mind is Franz Kafka who wrote very jarring letters, journals, and stories where he expressed a feeling of wanting to be alone to avoid being misunderstood. I, too, have had severe anxiety around speaking with other people for a long time now. I do everything I can to avoid phone calls or casual conversation. When I do talk to people, I stumble over my words, I have weird pauses…My mouth moves faster than my mind and I end up getting half-way through sentences without knowing where it’s actually going to end up. I literally had to write out this entire video script word-for-word just so it would make sense when you watched it. If this sounds familiar to you and you haven’t tried writing as a hobby, you may want to consider it. We are fortunate enough to live in an era when communicating mostly through writing is actually a reasonable way to live. Email, messaging, a majority of the internet, written words make up a HUGE part of the information we consume and share. So, obviously, improving your writing skills is a simple way to get ahead. Becoming a writer will make you stand out. Now, being a “writer” doesn’t mean you need to write novels. As I mentioned before, writing is EVERYWHERE. I’ve made a great living over the last five years just writing simple instructions for different companies. I also got those jobs by writing an eye-catching resume and engaging emails. I wouldn’t have been able to do any of that if I hadn’t been practicing. Just like with any other skill: You need to practice to get better. So start a project. Set a goal and make a commitment to yourself to improve your writing skills. Maybe you DO want to write a novel. Pick a premise, create an outline, and start writing. Maybe you want to write better emails. Double check each email for the next several weeks to make sure you’re being clear and putting the important stuff up top. Maybe you want to just get the thoughts out of your head each night before bed. Order a journal and start writing for 20 minutes before you turn out the lights. There are 2 big reasons you should focus on improving your writing: Like I mentioned earlier, written communication is so common, it’s a skill you will use EVERY DAY. The better you get, the better you’ll be able to express ideas with others. That allows you to connect with those around you when your spoken words are less than ideal. And, sure, you could just work on your anxiety and practice speaking regularly, that’s a good thing too…but I’m definitely not the guy you want to come to for advice about speaking well. Good? About doing a good job speaking. Thanks for watching!
