Guest speaker - Pierre Carter (https://www.sevensummits.com) On Saturday morning 4 February, I attended the second EAA Chapter 322 gathering this year held in the EAA auditorium at Rand Airport. EAA has changed the meetings to the first Saturday morning of the month breakfast gatherings, which I think is a great idea, because this allows for more time to invite guest speakers as well enjoy the company of fellow members. Chairman Neil Bowden introduced Pierre Carter who was awarded the Aero Club of South Africa’s James Gilliland trophy for the most meritorious feat over the past two years. Pierre provided an amazing account of his trip to Mt. Everest over a seven-week period in May last year. Pierre paraglided off Mount Everest and into the history books when he took-off near the summit at an altitude of 8,000 metres. He flew for 20 minutes and landed at Gorakshep at around 5 200 metres. Pierre’s detailed account of how he and a group of South Africans including his two brothers, his daughter, Jeremy Holdcroft and his mother Peta-Ann Holdcroft hiked to the Everest base camp. Whilst the others remained at the base camp, Pierre accompanied by a Japanese climber, his Sherpa and several other climbers made it to the 8 000 - metre point from which his permit allowed him to fly his paraglider. Whilst the other members of the team continued to the top of Mt. Everest, Pierre ran for around 30 metres down an ever-steepening slope until his paraglider started flying. Although he could have made the flight all the way down, his hiking gear was at base camp, so he elected to land nearby.
