How was Germany divided after World War II? The division of Germany occured after WW2 was over. Germany's easternmost province East Prussia was carved up by the Poles and the Soviets. This was the death of East Prussia. Germany lost Pomerania and Silesia to Poland as well. Poland lost its eastern territory to the USSR. Also Germans were expulsed. These German expulsions after WW2 are a forgotten chapter of the aftermath of the Second World War. So how was Germany carved up? The Theodore N. Kaufman Plan and the Morgenthau Plan were rejected. Germany was divided by the Soviets, the British, the Americans and the French. And then there was also the Saarland which became Saar Protectorate.
