A Judge heard arguments to suppress two motions to suppress evidence obtained from the vehicle driven by Sean Higgins. Sean Higgins, 44, of Woodstown, New Jersey, faces multiple charges stemming from a fatal incident on August 29, 2024, in Oldmans Township. He is accused of striking and killing NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew Gaudreau while they were bicycling. Higgins has been charged with two counts each of reckless vehicular homicide and aggravated manslaughter, as well as evidence tampering and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Authorities allege that Higgins was impaired, with a blood alcohol content of 0.087, and exhibited aggressive driving behavior at the time of the crash. Witnesses reported that the Gaudreau brothers were riding single file on the road's edge when they were struck. The defense has contested aspects of the charges, but a judge upheld all charges in April 2025, stating there was no evidence of contributory negligence by the victims. The case is being heard by Superior Court Judge Michael Silvanio. The prosecution is led by Assistant Prosecutor Michael Mestern. Sean Higgins is represented by attorneys Matthew Portella and Richard Klineburger III. If convicted on all counts, Higgins faces up to 70 years in prison.
