I Don't Want What Satan Gives (words & music by Jerry Marshall Wilson)

There's a famous line in the movie The Usual Suspects. One of the main characters says, "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." I think that a far more effective trick that the devil pulled is convincing people that the world and everything in it just happened by accident, rather than being created. Once the knowledge that we were created in the image of God is lost, everything else follows. Pap saw that point the same way. That's why he wrote several songs about creation as clear, demonstrative evidence of God. In Paradise Lost, when Satan gathers with his angels in the "sides of the north," before the war in Heaven, an angel named Abdiel (who remained loyal to God) visits them. Satan tries to convince Abdiel that God did not create him nor the other angels. Satan asks, "Do you remember a time when you were not?" Abdiel isn't having any of it, and he wisely flees back to the other Angels. Because he refused to buy into that critical lie, he doesn't fall with Satan's angels. An accomplished scientist and one of the most intelligent, knowledgeable humans to have walked the earth, Milton knew that acknowledging creation is essential to faith. That's why he had Satan deny it to his fellow angels. Hitler's minister of propaganda, Goebbles, said that it is easier to get people to believe a great big lie than a small one. That's true. I wouldn't be surprised if Satan whispered that very advice in his ear. No lie is bigger or more preposterously absurd than the lie that claims that the universe could have created itself; yet millions, if not billions of people believe it, or at least are open to that "possibility." According to Goebbles, huge lies work because people think they're too big to have been made up. Once Satan succeeds in getting someone to believe the universe wasn't created, his work is pretty much done concerning that individual, and he can move on to other souls. Though it wasn't one of my favorite songs that Pap wrote, when I was a kid, this song struck me because it speaks of Satan as a person, not just a spirit or force. In that regard, Pap's song is similar to Ira Louvin's "Satan is Real." Both songs explain that we can clearly see Satan's existence in the bad things that he causes and brings about in the world. In his song, Pap rejects the things that Satan has to offer. We know that Satan can in fact offer us things because he is the "prince of this world." When Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness, he offered him earthly kingdoms. I've heard several preachers say that Satan wasn't lying about that part. He did indeed have the power to give those things to Jesus if Jesus had betrayed the Father. Of course, Jesus knew that earthly kingdoms are temporary and vain. As Pap's song says, even though Satan can give us things, the end is the way of death. The Bible makes it plain that Satan is our adversary and has been since the beginning. As Pokey Lafarge sang in one of his songs, "the devil ain't lazy." He and his fallen angels are working 24/7 to take as many precious souls from God as they can. Unbelievers often question why God made Satan if Satan is evil. In Blake's famous poem "The Tiger," he seems to wonder or question if God created evil. Of course, the answer to that question is no. God did not create evil any more than he created good or justice. Those things just are, just as God just is. Anyone with free will and mental competence can make his/her own choices, using an inborn conscience as guide. God's almighty power comes from his perfect righteousness. Our death comes from our sin, but through Christ we don't have to die a second death and have our souls destroyed in the lake of fire that is reserved for Satan and his angels. Pap's song may seem simple and straightforward, but I know that a lot of thought and study went into its lyrics. Pap also wrote the recitation that he spoke on the record. With this song, he was trying to warn listeners and help them see through Satan's lies. If you want to learn more about this particular song and the recording of it, you can watch this video: ttps://   / watchv=zi5prnzvdcq&t=7s   As of the time of this upload, I still have some original-issue LP's of the Words of Life album. If you would like to order a copy, please email me at paulwwilson15@hotmail.com or write me at 564 Wilson Road, Brasstown NC 28902. Lyrics are below (minus the recitation): I don't want the wages of sin, But I want God's sweet peace within. I don't like the way Satan lives, And I don't want the things that he gives. The gift of God is eternal life, And I know He'll give me what's best. Satan has the way that seems right, But the end is the way of death. I'll not do as Satan commands. I'll not live the way that he lives. For someday, when before God I stand, I'll not want what Satan gives. Repeat Chorus
