What is H.323 and H.323 Protocol

CBT Nuggets trainer Lalo Nunez explains the H.323 protocol. H.323 is actually a suite of protocols that’s based on the Q.931 protocol. It’s a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol that defaults to port 1720 and is essential for voice, video and data conferencing. H.323 goes all the way back to 1996. The Integrated Services Digital Network signaling protocol Q.931 led the way for H.323, which improved on the antiquated protocol in many ways. Since H.323 is so old, SIP is now the protocol you’re probably familiar with — it’s the more recent and commonly used protocol. There are networks and gateways where SIP is not supported. If you find yourself supporting them, you don’t want to be caught off-guard by a requirement to have PRIs. And if you’ve got PRIs on a voice gateway going out to the PSTN, you’re probably going to need H.323. H.323 gateways are configured to have their own dial plans that aren’t dependent on CUCM. Call processing happens at the H.323 gateway — it’s not done by CUCM as is the case with MGCP. H.225 handles call setup and tear down. H.245 negotiates audio, video, and codec capability.
