Nothing But Noise: My father was an influential theoretical physicist, artist, musician and a polymath well versed in acoustics. The effect is similar to what we hear from combustion engines such as from automobiles to jets to rockets which answer he seemed to like. Tines have a very different energy profile from strings, they are comparatively massive so when paper is pressed against a tine it keeps vibrating.
