Remember to watch the Part 2 about this topic where I test a Custom Socket Bracket for this platform: • Custom LGA1700 Socket Bracket - Socke... So after the posts regarding the LGA 1700 Washer Mod I wanted to try the whole thing myself. Before commenting any of these procedures I want to try them first. I used plastic washers in my own example, but sadly I couldn't use any thicker washer than 0.8mm on all of the 4 screw holes. I could use 1.0mm thick options on the right side of the CPU socket but only 0.8mm thick ones on the part of the clamping mechanism that has the lever attached to it. I believe my small gains from this procedure are partly due to the lapped CPU. As Intel CPU heat spreaders are usually convex, I don't get the same gain from this modification as my IHS is already flattened, and it can be seen from the thermal paste spread that the very center of the IHS has had very good contact but the outside edges did not. As we do know that most of the CPU coolers have a little bit Concave base intentionally from the factory, that has to explain the thing. So in my case I really have to lap the water block to fix that problem, and then I could likely gain even more. To really improve the thermals on this generation you still need to consider delidding, which has already been proven to gain around 10 degrees, and then either lap the CPU while it is clamped inside the socket, which obviously requires a dead motherboard or remove the socket clamping mechanism completely and use a plastic bracket that keeps the CPU in place and then it won't bend at all. Thumbs up to Splave for the pictures and findings and for the brave lapping process! Article over at Igor's Lab: https://www.igorslab.de/en/alder-lake...
