14th January is probably one of the biggest days for people living in the Northern Indian Side. Yes, we are talking about Makar Sankranti, which marks the beginning of the joyous spring season, marking the end of Winter, and also the starting of the Rabi Crop plantation. One can find the skies full of kites, a way people like to celebrate this day. While we are aware about the festival, we would also like to enlighten the fact that this day is also important astronomically. How? well, Makar Sankranti can be loosely translated as “Transition of Sun in Capriconous”, Makar being Capricon, and Sankranti being a form of Sankraman, which means transition. In fact there are 12 Sankrantis in India, one for each Zodiac! But why only Makar Sankranti is only given importance and not the other 11 ?
