The JL-9 (also known as FTC-2000) is a supersonic advanced jet trainer developed by China to bridge the gap between basic training aircraft and frontline fighter jets. It was developed by Guizhou Aviation Industry Group and is derived from the Chinese-built MiG-21 (J-7) airframe, incorporating the proven aerodynamic layout of the MiG-21 while extensively redesigned for training purposes. The aircraft features a tandem two-seat cockpit, modernized avionics, and improved flight stability compared with the original MiG-21 design. While retaining supersonic performance, the JL-9 emphasizes safe handling characteristics suitable for advanced pilot training.
