I started with my mockup that I used to pitch my idea to the restaurant and from there I taped the dimensions to the wall to get an idea of the scale. Because of how large this project was, I planned out the placement of the moss by taping different colors of construction paper to the wall. Once I was happy with the layout I took a photo of the design and began to build out the platforms. I made the frames by cutting some wood outside corner molding at a 45° miter. I used wood glue to hold the frame together. I then added glue to the inside ledge of the frame to add the 1/4 plywood and secured it with staples. I filled any gaps in the frame with wood putty and sanded it smooth once dried. Then I flipped the panels over and secured one half of the French cleat. Next I painted the front of the platforms with a couple coats of black paint so no wood would peak out from behind the moss, and sealed the frame with a polycrylic top coat. I then secured the other half of the French cleat to my studio wall and removed the design I had created out of construction paper. I hung all three of the platforms to the wall and then drew out my design in chalk using my reference photo. I used my favorite preserved moss from SuperMoss for the project, and I attached each type of moss in layers starting with the sheet moss because it’s the flattest. I removed any debris from the moss and then hot glued the moss to the platform with black glue sticks. I patched different pieces of sheet moss together making sure to glue down the seams. Once all the sheet moss was secured, I moved onto placing the mood moss. The mood moss is the most pillowy of the mosses and sometimes needs to be reshaped with a mixture of vegetable glycerine and distilled water. Once the desired shape was achieved; I adhered the pieces to the platform with school glue to seal the back of the moss and hot glue for a quick hold. I used my design as a reference for the layout, but ultimately let the moss speak to me on the placement because each piece is so unique. Once all the mood moss was attached I could add the reindeer moss. I prefer to remove the lower half of the reindeer moss so it doesn’t stand so tall and then I glued each piece to the platform. Wearing gloves for this step is advised because the reindeer moss is dyed and could stain your hands. Lastly I trimmed back any of the fluff so it wasn’t covering the frame. This large moss wall installation is made with preserved moss so it doesn’t require water to continue to look lush for years to come.
