On Saturday 24th of January 2026, embarking upon the journey between the home base of Plimmerton - Taihape and return, this special trip documents Mainline Steam's first excursion for DJ 1229 on the North Island Main Trunk, as well as the locomotive's first ever outing under preservation. DJ 1229 (one of two DJ's at MLS, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan in 1968) has held its inaugural revenue excursion up the North Island Main Trunk as far up as Taihape! This is a significant occasion because the DJ class in particular were once dominant workhorses in the South Island, which makes it a rare sight to be on the rails of the North Island. I'd personally say that doing a chase up to Taihape and back is more of a warm up than just calling it a "long" trip! Moreover, one fascinating thing about this train is that Steam Incorporated let MLS use their red AG 239 observation carriage because their original Fm 3010 generator van has broken down.
