Our bodies are 2/3’s water, though many of us aren’t drinking enough of it. “People in Florida do tend to struggle with water intake. I see this every single day. I encourage most of my patients to pre-hydrate so that they're never actually dehydrated when they're spending time outside,” said Urologist Dr. Tyler Maiers. If dehydration becomes severe, “Dehydration can cause a variety of issues from nausea, vomiting, to loss of electrolytes, which in the most severe cases can lead to seizures,” said Dr. Maiers. Extreme dehydration can even lead to death. Proper hydration on the other hand can help with brain performance, digestion, energy, weight loss, kidney function, decreased joint pain, and more. “There's not necessarily a hard fast rule in terms of daily water intake. I typically recommend at least 64 ounces assuming someone is getting extra fluids throughout the day. For people who are outside and particularly active during the day who might be sweating or dehydrated, I recommend higher amounts closer to 100 ounces per day,” said Dr. Maiers. A quality water bottle or tumbler may be worth the investment. “It's really encouraging to see people carrying around big water bottles. It's a common conversation that I have with patients, basically pick out a water bottle that you're proud to have with you throughout the day and that can serve as a reminder to get water intake throughout,” said Dr. Maiers. It's important to remember that carbonated drinks aren’t hydrating in the same way that water is. Speak with your doctor if you have concerns about your water intake.
