First and foremost, i want to preface this entire list with #1 as being the most important. A good negotiator, one that can come time and time again to negotiate with the same company will NEVER belittle or talk down in a way of superiority with the person he is negotiating with. The good negotiation conveys his “superiority” by being able to get what he needs from the negotiation, and not leaving the other side with feelings of resentment or desire to retaliate. 2. Go in "ONLY to Test Drive". If you're not ready to cut the check for THAT car, you shouldn't be test driving. No matter what. I'm not saying you shouldn't leave without buying, what I AM saying is that in case you are put in a position of power such as the dealership NEEDING to sell that or A car that day, you've got to be ready. I know this is a bit tough on used cars, however if it is a new car, try to rule out as many cars as possible by watching videos, reading reviews, and cutting down your shopping list. 3. Never start negotiations without knowing EVERY SINGLE DETAIL about the price, and what you want that car for. A good car negotiator will know inside out what everyone is buying or leasing that car for inside out, and go for more. Research the car as best as you can, and if you do suck at negotiating, I've got a link in the description where you can shop around to multiple dealers. 4. Not having a backup plan. The strongest leverage anyone has, ESPECIALLY when negotiating a car is having a price already at their disposal. This is why people bluff a lot at the dealership using phrases like "I have X price from Y dealership" even if they don't, or "my friend just got this car for X". When the previous statements are true, and your body language and eye contact convey that message, no sales manager will turn down your offer. 5. "Start" a negotiation with the number they want to wrap up with. A good negotiator, including myself would argue a bit differently in that if you are "starting" a negotiation with a number, it better be delivered as an ultimatum. I had a conversation about this the other day with my cousin on the Shant and Ari Podcast, and he asked, is it true that the first person to make the offer lost in negotiation, and I responded with "unless its an ultimatum". This is not a guarantee you will get your number, however if you don't on the first attempt, then your best bet is to leave the table. 6. Do business with "friends" or expecting a dealership you've done business with in the past is not going to want to profit off of you. The fact of the matter is, EVERYONE has to eat. When the person you're trying to negotiate with is a friend, that friendship or feeling of connection will most certainly get in the way of your best interest when doing this type of dirty work and quite possibly make or break your friendship. That's why the phrase "you don't crap where you eat" exists. Think about it... 7.
