South Carolina firing squad executes death row inmate despite calls for clemency

SOUTH CAROLINA (WCIV) — Friday night another South Carolina inmate died by firing squad. Mikal Mahdi was on death row for killing an Orangeburg Department of Public Safety officer in 2004. Firing squad came about in South Carolina after the state couldn't get the drugs used for the lethal injection, which caused a 14-year pause in the method of execution. Utah is the only other state in the country where the firing squad is used. Mikal Mahdi is the fifth person to be executed in South Carolina in less than eight months, and the second to choose to die by firing squad after reports of issues with lethal injection.
