Back from the brink - rare animals return to Dirk Hartog Island

𝗔 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱-𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗿𝗿𝘂𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮 / 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗸 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗴 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸 Since 2012, the 𝘙𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘯 𝘵𝘰 1616 project has been working to restore the island to how it might have looked when Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog first landed more than 400 years ago. With feral animals removed, 14 rare and threatened species - including the Shark Bay mouse, dibbler and banded hare-wallaby - are being successfully reintroduced to Malgana Country. Together with Malgana Traditional Owners, DBCA scientists are helping wildlife and habitats recover, turning this rugged island into a living Noah’s Ark. As today is the anniversary of when Dirk Hartog and his crew made landfall in 1616, we look at how the project is fulfilling science and conservation by providing new hope for WA's most vulnerable species.
