This performance piece is inspired by my nephew, who was born prematurely. The doctors told my sister that sometimes he would forget how to breathe, so when we held him, we had to place him against our chest so he could mimic our breathing and remember how to breathe. It was a tense time, and my sister, as his mother, was constantly panicking when we held him because he always reminded us to put him on our chest. Now, he's grown into a strong man, and when I look at him, I often say, "You almost died once—you forgot how to breathe." Breathing is something so fundamental, yet often taken for granted—until you're forced to focus on it.
