A National Taiwan University professor is making the case for giving traditional Chinese medicine to pets. Wu Chung-hsin, who teaches life sciences, claims that ingredients like tortoise shell and deer antler can help pets live a longer and more active life. Before the camera, this playful pooch won’t stand still for a minute. It’s hard to imagine that just a few months ago, Ah Pao could barely move. Ah Pao’s owner There was a traffic accident. His spine was crushed, so afterward, he stopped jumping as much. But he’s been eating health supplements for a month and now he can skip around once again. When he runs, he hops a little. He’s full of energy now. Ah Pao is 9 years old, which makes him nearly 60 in human years. Like many pet parents, his mom is keen on extending his life. A local professor is touting traditional Chinese medicine as a way to support a long and healthy lifespan. In our experiments, we found that a tortoise shell and deer antler supplement can improve a dog’s ability to exercise, as well as its bone density. Just like humans, pet get more prone to disease as they age. When infections strike, vets tend to prescribe antibiotics, but that can lead to infections even more difficult to treat. Wu says that adding traditional Chinese medicine remedies to pet food can delay aging. But what traditional Chinese medicine does is increase immunity and improve the body’s ability to fight disease. It enhances your body’s natural defenses against illness. What we want is a process that allows us to get government certification for proven therapeutic effects. Taiwanese are living longer and longer, and so are our pets. Wu says the ancient remedies have benefits for man as well as his best friend.
