Rodion Shchedrin's "Humoresque," composed in 1962, stands out as a unique and humorous piece that captures the essence of its title through a satirical lens. The work presents an unflattering portrayal of the middle-class "Homo Sovieticus," depicting a character who strives to appear cultured and important but ultimately reveals a more ridiculous, inebriated persona. Musically, "Humoresque" features a playful dialogue reminiscent of a tuba conversing with flutes, characterized by dynamic contrasts, syncopated rhythms, and wide leaps that enhance its comedic effect. The piece concludes unexpectedly with a powerful chord in E-flat major, leaving the audience with a sense of surprise and amusement, making it one of Shchedrin's most frequently performed works and a delightful example of humor in classical music. Tomislav Baynov is a Bulgarian-born pianist and composer who has created arrangements for multiple pianos and has worked with pieces by various composers. Clara P,. Clara M. and Akira R. (all 7 y.o.) performed this trio at the Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition and received 1st place in Ensemble Category.
