Here is a short video of the tools I use at my jewellers bench to carve my designs using tubes and slices of jewellers wax. The blue and green stuff is “jewellers wax”, which is a soft medium that can be hand carved into highly sculptural textural jewellery (and object) forms. The waxes once completed, are transformed into solid precious metals via the ancient process of “lost wax casting”. Effectively, this process of lost wax casting yields an identical metal replica of your original wax model. Pretty cool stuff! To get started with wax carving, you’ll need a few things! I have a couple of long form videos on my YouTube channel where I demonstrate a basic wax carving (and how to use the prescribed hand tools). In a nutshell (and in no particular order) you’ll require: a sturdy surface/tabletop (keep ergonomics in mind) jewellers wax (tubes for rings, slices for pendants etc) mini digital balance (for weighing your waxes and converting their weight to an approximate metal weight) wax reaming mandrel (for sizing your ring blank) regular ring sizing stick emery paper (600 grit) a scribe a dusting brush German dividers and/or a digital calliper (vernier gauge) a soldering pen and brass wool some talcum powder or kitchen flour (to better visualise your markings/guidelines) wax carving file a spare block of wax (for building detail) some sharp wax carvers stainless steel dental carvers (for carving and texturing) a bench peg (to attach to your tabletop, if you don’t already have a jewellers bench). If you’re wondering how much a setup for basic wax carving costs, it’s an approximate 350 - 400 AUD investment. Because the wax is soft, you’ll rarely need to replace any tools. The only thing you’ll need to replenish are your waxes (which are very cost effective)! Feel free to drop me a question below, and I’ll be happy to help! Links to my IG (where I currently maintain more of a presence) are in my YT links. My jewellery studio in Melbourne, Australia will be reopening in late January 2025 - so come along for an in-person wax carving experience you won’t regret. Happy carving, and enjoy!
