Celebrating the life of Darlene Barkema August 27, 1936 - March 6, 2026 Darlene Barkema, born Barbara Darlene Milford, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, at the age of 89 in Lansing, Michigan. She was born on August 27, 1936, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Darlene married the love of her life, Kenneth Leslie Barkema on December 4,1955. Kenneth preceded her in death in 2000. Together they built a loving family and shared many years of devotion and partnership. She is survived by her three children: George Barkema (Lisa), Debbie Allen, and David Barkema (Gina). She was a proud grandmother to nine grandchildren and a cherished great-grandmother to seventeen great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Elaine Thomas. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Murrel and Lorene Milford; her siblings, Norma, Gilbert (Norma’s twin), and Jim; her beloved husband, Kenneth Barkema; her son-in-law, Dan Allen; and her granddaughter, Serenity Allen. Darlene had a long and meaningful career as a secretary in the Microbiology Departments at the University of Wisconsin and Michigan State University. She took great pride in her work and the relationships she formed throughout her career. A faithful servant of God, Darlene was active in Mount Hope Church for 35 years and lived a life guided by her deep faith. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her kindness, and her unwavering commitment to her faith. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family that will be cherished by all who knew her.
