(17 Jul 2016) New clashes erupted on Sunday in Srinagar, the main city in the Indian portion of Kashmir, with security forces using tear gas to disperse protesters who responded by throwing stones. Last week, the largest street protests in recent years in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir erupted after Indian troops killed Burhan Wani, the popular young leader of the largest rebel group fighting against Indian rule. By Sunday, government officials said 36 people had died, while local newspapers and human rights groups claimed more than 40 had died. Hundreds of civilians and troops have also been injured. Authorities have shut down printing presses and temporarily banned newspapers from publishing in a sweeping information blackout. Kashmir, a predominantly Muslim region, is divided evenly between India and Pakistan, but both claim it in its entirety.
