[Transcript] [Baptist Health Neuroscience Center: Baptist Health South Florida] [What inspired you to be a doctor?] Justin Sporrer: My name is Justin and I'm a neurosurgeon here at Baptist Health. The brain is the crown jewel of evolution and creation, and to be able to restore it back to its normal function is one of the most amazing privileges that a person can have. [What role does empathy play in patient care?] Justin Sporrer: When I was in high school, a friend of mine was in a pretty bad car accident with a traumatic brain injury. And so that got me interested in the treatment of brain injuries, brain problems, nervous system problems, and then the interest just stayed with me all through my career. [Who is your most memorable patient?] Justin Sporrer: I have always loved rounding, seeing patients in clinic, and just getting to know them and trying to make them laugh a little bit. Trying to ease their fears a little bit. We're just two people in a room that are trying to solve the same problem. Justin Sporrer: He had a very large tumor in the front part of his brain, and so he came to my clinic in a desperate situation because he had no way of making money, and his personal relationships had also suffered. After I was able to take his brain tumor out, he had an almost immediate improvement in his memory and his personality. And that was proven by his family members in the room saying, "We got our old guy back."
