A quiet winter night in my 17th century English cottage by the sea: the fire has settled into that steady, companionable glow, my dogs are asleep nearby, and a new little Staffordshire dog is slowly appearing in a rag rug beneath my hands. This is companionable, cosy cottage storytelling. Come with me on a late afternoon walk through the village lane and nearby woods as the light fades to that blue-grey winter dusk. We bring home the smells of wet leaves and the quiet of the hedgerows, ready to set it all down by the hearth. Then we settle at the cottage fire with a rag rug project, using softened old fabric scraps cut into strips. In the evening in front of the fire there is the rhythm of rag rug hooking, my fascination with Staffordshire dogs, and the way this old cottage feels like a page from a storybook. You’ll see my collection of Staffordshire dogs on shelves and landing bookcases, including the ones with amber glass eyes that look as though they’re watching the comings and goings in this little storybook cottage. We take a slow, narrated tour of my picture rag rugs with rabbits and hares, a tapestry dog shaped into a footstool, and the cosy clutter of vintage textiles and china that make up my cottagecore, English country style. In the kitchen, I make proper hot chocolate in a white rabbit teapot — another character in the story — a small winter ritual that marks the shift from the outside world to the quiet of evening by the fire.
