It's great that portastudios and portable multitrack recorders are still being made. But it's unfortunate that current ones do not come with midi sync features or options. However, SMPTE will sync any multitracker recorder with your SMPTE reader-equipped sequencer, provided that multitrack can output the SMPTE tone to your SMPTE-equipped sequencer. You will also need to sacrifice a track. But that is better than attempting to simultaneously and precisely hit play on sequencer and record on your multitrack for every track of a song. In this video, I show how to sync any Tascam DP-XXSD with an MPC 2000 Studio Plus. This method also applies to all SMPTE reader-equipped sequencers and portable multitrack recorders. For demonstrational purposes, I sync a bass melody from my Synthesizer Workstation (via MPC 2000 Studio Plus sequencer) with the song that is tracked on Tascam DP-32SD. I also show how to set up SMPTE sync, using an MPC 2000 Studio Plus. The following MPCs have factory installed SMPTE boards (or are prewired for the optional SMPTE board): MPC 60 MPC 60II MPC 3000 MPC 2000 (prewired for optional SMPTE board) MPC 2000 Studio MPC 2000 Studio Plus MPC 2000XL (prewired for optional SMPTE board) MPC 2000XL Studio Sampler MPC 2000XL Studio Plus MPC 4000 MPC 2000 models are also called "MPC 2000 Classic" Also, 2nd hand factory SMPTE reader/generator boards for MPC 2000 and 2000XL can be bought for under $40 on eBay. Just make sure that you get the ones with the included chip. No other MPC sequencers are prewired for or have a factory installed SMPTE board.
