In this video, we will discuss about three major financial developments that could directly impact millions of Indians — especially those who have accounts in SBI, Union Bank, Canara Bank, or LIC. The government has taken a bold decision that could change the face of India’s public banking and insurance sector. The Central Government has decided to open top-level positions in public sector banks and LIC to professionals from the private banking sector— a move that marks a major shift from tradition. Until now, such key roles were reserved only for officers from government banks. But with this new order, corporate professionals could now hold some of the most powerful posts in India’s public financial institutions. However, this decision has triggered a major backlash. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) a collective of nine national bank unions — has strongly opposed the move, calling it an attempt at covert privatization. They also warn that outsourcing performance evaluations to HR agencies could undermine transparency and accountability in the banking system. Meanwhile, there’s another big headline from the banking sector — the government’s plan to merge Union Bank of India and Bank of India, which could create India’s second-largest public sector bank after SBI. Reports suggest the Finance Ministry is also exploring more mega-mergers, including Indian Bank with Indian Overseas Bank, while smaller banks like Bank of Maharashtra and Punjab & Sind Bank may face possible privatization in the future. And finally, in the tech world Elon Musk’s Starlink is officially setting up shop in Mumbai, with plans to bring high-speed satellite internet to even India’s most remote regions. The company has leased office space in Chandivali, Mumbai, and is expected to begin services by early 2026. The copyright ownership in the video rests with India Today Group.
