Mysterious discoveries in Kola Superdeep Borehole. Kola Superdeep Borehole is the deepest manmade hole on Earth. It was drilled about 40 years ago and still, it is holding the world record for the deepest manmade hole on the surface of Earth. This was purely a scientific expedition made by Soviet Union about 43 years ago. They were planning to drill down to the mantle layer of Earth and collect samples from there. But they couldn't reach that deep. Yet, they were able to go 12km deep into the Earth's crust! 12km! 9-12 km is the height at which commercial airplanes fly, the highest mountain on Earth in only 8km, the deepest point on the ocean floor is about 11km. So imagine the depth of Kola Superdeep Borehole! This is why it is called the Doorway To Hell. Scientists faced so many troubles during this expedition.
