Separating metals from each other efficiently is not always easy. When metals share similar physical properties such as electrical conductivity and density — as is the case with copper and brass — separation methods like eddy current separation, density sorting, or sensor-based induction sorting just aren’t the right solutions for the job. In this case, however, the materials exhibit another distinguishing characteristic that can be used effectively: color. While XRF technology also offers a reliable sorting option, color-based sorting provides the best cost–performance ratio for this application. With SENSOR IDENTIFY+ (or, like in this video, SENSOR SPECTRO+), copper and brass are reliably separated based on color. The color camera system detects the characteristic reddish tone of copper and precisely ejects it using compressed air, resulting in a cost-effective way to gain two cleanly separated metal fractions, ready for sale.
