"Aging Families and Health Symposium: Social Influences on Health Lifestyle Choices in Later Life" held on September 20, 2013 features leading scholars to highlight the contributions of social ties to health and health care in later life. Deborah Carr, PhD, Rutgers University Do Family Relations Affect End-of-Life Health Care Preparations? Karen Hooker, PhD, Oregon State University Self-Regulation of Health and Social Goals Through the Lens of Daily Variability Alex Zautra, PhD, Arizona State University Social Intelligence Training: A Promising Way to Enhance the Well-Being of Older Adults. The risk of chronic disease increases with age, and many older adults today must daily manage at least one chronic condition. Support from family is recognized as a critical, yet understudied, component in the maintenance of a complex regimen of health behavior modifications that accompany chronic illness. Thus, this conference is designed to draw attention to health benefits of sustaining close social ties as we age. Social partners increasingly are recognized as playing a crucial role in older adults' decision-making about daily health behaviors and future healthcare utilization. Moreover, support from close social partners promotes resilience and positive well-being, personal resources that may buffer detriments to health stemming from challenges and loss in later life. Sponsored by the Center for Aging and Life Course, the Center for Families at Purdue University, and the Purdue University Retirees Association. www.purdue.edu/hhs/cff/agingfamiliesandhealth2013
