Our last session fishing on the River Hull in Beverley we had one float between us. It contributed to the only fish of the day. The float we used that day was a home made float from over 30 years ago which I made for rock fishing for Wrasse. Which never happened. Since that last session on the River Hull I have been itching to make another float or two. I spent the last few weeks gathering what I think I might need and also thinking through a process for building them. All of what you see is what I planned in my head, no books or other media were consulted. ITS ALL FROM ME EAD. I did consider buying some floats but I was put off by the reviews. Everything from them falling apart because the glue is water soluble, the water based paint dissolving or being so fragile that they break apart as soon as you look at them. Now what you have to appreciate is that Keith and myself are Yorkshiremen. That means that if we can save 10p by making something ourselves then we will. We will only buy something if we prove to be totally useless at making it ourselves. The materials to make these floats cost no more than £12. However there are enough materials left over to potentially make at least 50 more. It has taken me about three hours in all to make them, so that is three hours TV electricity saved. Plus I picked up the feathers on one of my walks. I am not suggesting that anyone should start making their own floats. It is just that I wanted to save a few quid and fill in a few spare hours.
