Shia Muslims in Pakistan are being persecuted in mass numbers. One study reports 23,000 people have been killed since 1963 over their beliefs and the violence has no end in sight. » Subscribe to NowThis: http://go.nowth.is/News_Subscribe » Sign up for our newsletter KnowThis to get the biggest stories of the day delivered straight to your inbox: https://go.nowth.is/KnowThis Zahra: I’m Zahra Haider, this is NowThis, and I’m in Pakistan to dive into one of the world’s most underreported conflicts: the target killings and persecution of Shia Muslims. We’ll speak with locals who can tell us what life for Pakistani Shias looks like today,. Asad Gokal 2: We don’t even feel that we can live and breathe freely in this country. Raza Askari: We have not been safe here. Zahra: We’ll bring in some experts who can help us understand what led Pakistan to such a peak of sectarian violence. Professor Hassan Abbas: The state of Pakistan has failed to defend the Shia Muslims. Brad Adams: The consequence is that they get away with murder. Zahra: Islam isn’t a monolith. Like any religion, there are different sects. The majority of the world’s Muslims are Sunni, with another estimated 15 - 20% being Shia, and the remainder a variety of other Islamic minorities. One distinction is that Shia Islam is characterized by a belief that the long line of Prophets ending with Muhammad and Muhammad’s family were divine messengers of God, while Sunnis believe only the prophets were. The two are a lot more alike than they are different. In Pakistan, Shia Muslims make up around 20% of the population. In 2017, 95% of sectarian violence worldwide was focused only on Shia Muslims. Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by violent religious extremism on the planet. Sadly, anti-Shia hate groups are prominent in Pakistani society. Their leaders publicly call for violence against the Shia minority, with little to no repercussions from the government. Source: Global Extremism Monitor Source: Pakistan: A Country Study / Library of Congress Ahmed Ludhianvi, Chief, ASWJ: If any Shia is still alive after 24 hours, do not say we did what we were supposed to do. Aurangzaib Farooqi, President, ASWJ]: I will make the Sunnis so strong that no Sunni will ever have to shake hands with a Shia. From now on, they will die on their own, we won’t even need to kill them. Crowd: Shias are infidels! ZAHRA: I spoke to Asad Gokal and Raza Askari, Shia Muslims who have both lost family members to anti-Shia hate crimes, to learn about what life in Pakistan feels like for them. Zahra: I wanna know from you, do you feel safe? Asad Gokal: Well, how can one feel safe when as soon as he steps out of his home, he sees it written, “Shia infidel”? [B roll of hate graffiti] It’s written on every single street, that “Shias are infidels, you kill them and you enter into Paradise.” Zahra: Do you feel safe where you live in Pakistan right now? Do you feel safe? Raza Askari: No, no, no. [...] [Shows locket he has for safety] Because we don’t have the ability to move, we just pray, we just pray to god. #Pakistan #Muslims #World #Shia #News #NowThis #NowThisNews Connect with NowThis » Like us on Facebook: http://go.nowth.is/News_Facebook » Tweet us on Twitter: http://go.nowth.is/News_Twitter » Follow us on Instagram: http://go.nowth.is/News_Instagram » Find us on Snapchat Discover: http://go.nowth.is/News_Snapchat NowThis is your premier news outlet providing you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on all the latest in trending news.
