Despite a career already in full swing before 1982 and after it, Patrice Rushen is sadly a one hit wonder on the Pop charts in her homeland of America. The multi talented musician and vocalist tapped into the style of times when she fashioned 'Forget Me Nots' with that memorable bass line and infectious lyric and groove. There were so many different mixes issued of this great song - i think the one I have posted is the 'Special Dance Mix'. I have used a performance from Top Of The Pops which fellow youtuber DJ Japinha SA, uploaded & I have re-edited it to accommodate this generous long version of Patrice's hit single. Only reaching #23 Billboard Pop, 'Forget Me Nots' reached its peak 40 years ago this month, but it was a considerably bigger success on the R&B and Dance Charts where it peaked at #4 and #2 respectively. I must make special mention to Gerald Albright whose tenor sax solo made this so funky, as well as Freddie Washington and his bass line composition and playing on the record helped make this song so distinctive and vibey. The combination of these musical ingredients, as well as Patrice's sweet vocal made for a polished and enjoyable joint back in the day. The song looms much larger than its chart placement would indicate, and here in Australia it only made #29, but our neighbours across the ditch in New Zealand loved it more; driving it into the Top 10 and its best showing anywhere in the world! Perhaps it was the distinctive sound of the track that has made it memorable and dare I say - encouraged us to 'Forget Me Not!' Sorry, I had to...... Patrice received a pair of Grammy nods in early 1983 - for 'Best R&B Female Vocal (losing to Jennifer Holliday with the now iconic 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going') in a tough category that year that included Donna Summer ('Love Is In Control'), Aretha Franklin ('Jump To It'), Diana Ross ('Muscles') and Deniece Williams (It's Gonna Take A Miracle). Patrice was also up for Best Instrumental but losing that to Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing'. Tough competition. Patrice Rushen has continued to record and release albums, but no new material after 1997. Her last opus of new material 'Signature' featured a brilliant cover of Sade's classic 'Smooth Operator'. This fun clip and great retro song is a postcard from that specific time and place but it does sound pretty wonderful 40 years later and it was a lot of fun to create the extended video from the Top Of The Pops performance.
