Government Control Over Hindu Temples - Why It Matters | Audio Article | Drishti IAS

The Karnataka Assembly abolished the 'Muzrai Act' by passing a bill last year to end government control of Hindu temples. After that, the government of Uttarakhand also brought a similar bill to repeal the Chardham Devasthanam Act. In fact, in the past years there have been demands to remove government control from big Hindu temples. The matter has reached the Supreme Court and has repeatedly ruled against government control. Even in the past, the Supreme Court rejected a petition by the Andhra Pradesh government regarding the control of the Ahobilam Mathh, saying why religious places should not be under the control of religious persons. Some petitions in this context are still pending in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has sought response from the Center and all state governments on these petitions filed against government control over Hindu religious places. Therefore, it is bound to raise the question that to what extent is government control over Hindu temples justified? Is it contrary to constitutional articles 25 and 26 of secularism? Doesn't this hurt the spirit of secularism?
